Statistical stability of equilibrium states for interval maps
We consider families of multimodal interval maps with polynomial growth of
the derivative along the critical orbits. For these maps Bruin and Todd have
shown the existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states for the potential
, for close to 1. We show that these
equilibrium states vary continuously in the weak topology within such
families. Moreover, in the case , when the equilibrium states are
absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue, we show that the densities vary

Scalar Top Quark Studies with Various Visible Energies
The precision determination of scalar top quark properties will play an
important role at a future International Linear Collider (ILC). Recent and
ongoing studies are discussed for different experimental topologies in the
detector. First results are presented for small mass differences between the
scalar top and neutralino masses. This corresponds to a small expected visible
energy in the detector. An ILC will be a unique accelerator to explore this
scenario. In addition to finding the existence of light stop quarks, the
precise measurement of their properties is crucial for testing their impact on
the dark matter relic abundance and the mechanism of electroweak baryogenesis.
Significant sensitivity for mass differences down to 5 GeV are obtained. The
simulation is based on a fast and realistic detector simulation. A vertex
detector concept of the Linear Collider Flavor Identification
(LCFI)collaboration, which studies pixel detectors for heavy quark flavour
identification, is implemented in the simulations for c-quark tagging. The
study extends simulations for large mass differences (large visible energy) for
which aspects of different detector simulations, the vertex detector design,
and different methods for the determination of the scalar top mass are
discussed. Based on the detailed simulations we study the uncertainties for the
dark matter density predictions and their estimated uncertainties from various
sources. In the region of parameters where stop-neutralino co-annihilation
leads to a value of the relic density consistent with experimental results, as
precisely determined by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP), the
stop-neutralino mass difference is small and the ILC will be able to explore

The compound Poisson limit ruling periodic extreme behaviour of non-uniformly hyperbolic dynamics
We prove that the distributional limit of the normalised number of returns to
small neighbourhoods of periodic points of non-uniformly hyperbolic dynamical
systems is compound Poisson. The returns to small balls around a fixed point in
the phase space correspond to the occurrence of rare events, or exceedances of
high thresholds, so that there is a connection between the laws of Return Times
Statistics and Extreme Value Laws. The fact that the fixed point in the phase
space is a repelling periodic point implies that there is a tendency for the
exceedances to appear in clusters whose average sizes is given by the Extremal
Index, which depends on the expansion of the system at the periodic point.
We recall that for generic points, the exceedances, in the limit, are
singular and occur at Poisson times. However, around periodic points, the
picture is different: the respective point processes of exceedances converge to
a compound Poisson process, so instead of single exceedances, we have entire
clusters of exceedances occurring at Poisson times with a geometric
distribution ruling its multiplicity.
The systems to which our results apply include: general piecewise expanding
maps of the interval (Rychlik maps), maps with indifferent fixed points
(Manneville-Pomeau maps) and Benedicks-Carleson quadratic maps.Comment: To appear in Communications in Mathematical Physic
Does e-learning policy drive change in Higher Education?: A case study relating models of organisational change to e-learning implementation
Due to the heightened competition introduced by the potential global market and the need for structural changes within organisations delivering e-content, e-learning policy is beginning to take on a more significant role within the context of educational policy per se. For this reason, it is becoming increasingly important to establish what effect such policies have and how they are achieved. This paper addresses this question, illustrating five ways in which change is understood (Fordist, evolutionary, ecological, community of practice and discourse-oriented) and then using this range of perspectives to explore how e-learning policy drives change (both organisational and pedagogic) within a selected higher education institution. The implications of this case are then discussed, and both methodological and pragmatic conclusions are drawn, considering the relative insights offered by the models and ways in which change around e-learning might be supported or promoted
Statistical stability and limit laws for Rovella maps
We consider the family of one-dimensional maps arising from the contracting
Lorenz attractors studied by Rovella. Benedicks-Carleson techniques were used
by Rovella to prove that there is a one-parameter family of maps whose
derivatives along their critical orbits increase exponentially fast and the
critical orbits have slow recurrent to the critical point. Metzger proved that
these maps have a unique absolutely continuous ergodic invariant probability
measure (SRB measure).
Here we use the technique developed by Freitas and show that the tail set
(the set of points which at a given time have not achieved either the
exponential growth of derivative or the slow recurrence) decays exponentially
fast as time passes. As a consequence, we obtain the continuous variation of
the densities of the SRB measures and associated metric entropies with the
parameter. Our main result also implies some statistical properties for these

Removal of toxic metals from solution by leaf, stem and root phytomass of Quercus ilex L. (holly oak)
Increased consciousness for safeguarding the aqueous environment has prompted a search for alternative technologies for the removal of toxic metal ions from aqueous solutions. In this regard, a wide variety of biomass is being considered as adsorbents of heavy metals for treatment of industrial and domestic wastewaters as well as natural waters, including drinking water. In the present investigation, the potential of Quercus ilex phytomass from stem, leaf and root as an adsorbent of chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) at ambient temperature was investigated. The metal uptake capacity of the root for different metals was found to be in the order: Ni>Cd>Pb>Cu>Cr; stem Ni>Pb>Cu>Cd>Cr; and leaf Ni>Cd>Cu>Pb>Cr. The highest amount adsorbed was Ni (root>leaf>stem). Data from this laboratory demonstrated that Ni is sequestered mostly in the roots, where concentrations can be as high as 428.4 ng/g dry wt., when 1-year-old seedlings were treated with Ni (2000 mg/l) in pot culture experiments, compared to 7.63 ng/g dry wt., control (garden and greenhouse soil) topsoil where Ni was present in trace amounts. This proves that the root biomass of Q. ilex has the capacity for complexing Ni. Cr exhibited the least adsorption values for all the three types of phytomass compared to other metals. The trend of adsorption of the phytomass was similar for Ni and Cd, i.e. root>leaf>stem. Desorption with 10 mM Na4 EDTA was effective (55-90%) and, hence, there exists the possibility of recycling the phytomass. The biosorption results of recycled phytomass suggest that the selected adsorbents are re-usable.
